YouTube Thumbnail Size: The 1280x720 Guide

Getting the thumbnail size right is the easiest win in YouTube design, and also the one people get wrong most often. Here is everything you need, in one place.

The numbers

• Resolution: 1280 x 720 pixels
• Aspect ratio: 16:9
• Minimum width: 640 pixels (but always upload at 1280)
• File format: JPG, PNG, or WebP
• Max file size: 2 MB

Upload at the full 1280 x 720. YouTube downscales your thumbnail for small previews, but it never upscales, so starting smaller just makes you look blurry.

Why 16:9 matters

YouTube displays thumbnails in a 16:9 frame across search, the home feed, suggested videos, and embeds. If you design at the wrong ratio, YouTube will crop or letterbox your image and your careful composition falls apart. Designing at exactly 1280 x 720 means what you see is what every viewer sees.

The mobile-safe zone

More than 70% of watch time happens on phones, where your thumbnail is barely bigger than a thumbnail. Two rules follow from that:

1. Keep text large and minimal. Three to five words, heavy font, thick outline. Test it by shrinking the image to about 120 pixels wide. If you cannot read it, simplify.
2. Watch the bottom-right corner. YouTube overlays the video duration there. Keep important text and faces out of that corner.

Format: JPG or PNG?

For photographic thumbnails (faces, scenes, AI-generated backgrounds), JPG at high quality gives the smallest file with no visible loss. Use PNG only when you need crisp edges on flat graphics or transparency in your source files. Either way, stay under the 2 MB cap.
